Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical — Holiday Show 2010
by Dan Goggin; Directed by Rose-Marie Abi-Richa
Nuncrackers is the first cable access "special" taped by the Little Sisters of Hoboken in their basement studio, starring the nuns you love, Father Trott, and Mt. Saint Helen’s most talented grade-school students. This family-friendly show is fi lled with "Nunsense" humor, holiday carols, a "Secret Santa" with audience participation, and an uproarious take on Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet.
Tickets go on sale Monday, September 27 at 610-363-7075.
Auditions
- Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 1:00 PM
- Monday, September 13, 2010 at 7:00 PM
Director Rose-Marie Abi-Richa seeks five women, one man, two girls, and two boys for this holiday musical. Please prepare a one-minute song selection in the range and style of the role you are most interested in. Auditions will also include cold readings from the script and movement. Those auditioning for either Sister Mary Regina or Father Virgil Manly Trott will be asked to demonstrate some improvisational movement (details will be given at auditions). Those auditioning for Father Virgil Manly Trott will also be asked to impersonate Julia Child.
Rehearsals will be held on Sunday afternoons, Monday and Wednesday nights. Please bring a list of conflicts with you to auditions. You may download the complete rehearsal and performance calendar here (PDF, 159KB).
If you would like to complete your audition form in advance, please download it here (PDF, 133KB), print it out and complete it, and bring it with you to the auditions.
Roles include:
- Sister Mary Regina (mezzo/soprano with good low notes, G to C)—The Mother Superior. Grew up in a circus family, and her “showbiz” background and humor shines through her attempt at creating a rough exterior.
- Sister Mary Hubert (Gospel-style mezzo belt B flat to F)—Mistress of Novices, second in command and very practical.
- Sister Robert Anne (Broadway mezzo belt A to D#)—Streetwise nun from Brooklyn. A tough cookie with a heart of gold. Feels her theatrical potential is not appreciated by Mother Superior, who refuses to let her “star” in the show. Plays the trumpet during one number (although not required to be cast).
- Sister Mary Paul (Country-style mezzo belter F# to C)—Hit on the head with a crucifix, for a long time she didn’t remember who she was. Now, with her memory restored, she is known as a country singer and the first nun to appear at the Grand Ole Opry; still seems a “little vacant" but is innocently endearing.
- Sister Mary Leo (mezzo belter A to D#)—Dedicated her life to becoming the first famous nun ballerina so is very excited to be in the Christmas show. Note, the actor playing this part appears onstage only in the very first song and will assist as stage crew. She will also perform as the voice of the Nun Puppet, Sister Mary Annette.
- Father Virgil Manly Trott (tenor/high baritone C to E, 30—55)—Sister Leo’s “real life” brother. Has his own radio show and was part of the Trott Family Singers.
- Mount Saint Helen’s Students (A flat to F)—Two boys and two girls, ages 8–17. Must be able to whistle.
