Follies

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim; Book by James Goldman; Directed by Robert G. De Remigio

In a theater scheduled for demolition, the past members of a musical revue that played there between the World Wars reunite. Songs from their old show—some of Sondheim's richest—are performed by the accomplished characters and the ghosts of their promising young selves, exploring love and the loss of the American dream.

NOTE: This show contains language and adult romantic subject matter that may be unappealing to younger children.

Auditions

  • Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 2:00 PM - Singing, Cold Readings
  • Monday, March 15, 2010 at 7:00 PM - Singing, Cold Readings
  • Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 7:00 PM - Dance, Callbacks by appointment

Director Robert G. De Remigio is looking for 11 men and up to 20 women for roles as follows:

  • Ten women of various ages to play characters ranging from 18 to 70. The age of the actor is not an issue as long as she can portray the age of the character. Some of these women may need to play double characters, acting as their younger selves. The only characters that cannot double parts are SALLY DURANT PLUMMER and PHYLLIS ROGERS STONE.
  • Up to ten women ages 16 to 40 to be dance and chorus of show girls. All or some of These women may be playing the younger versions of the above characters.
  • Four men to play ages between 40 and 60. Two of these men may need to play their younger selves as well.
  • Two men ages 16 to 30 to play YOUNG BUDDY and YOUNG BEN, as well as be male chorus and dance.
  • Five men age 16 and up to be chorus boys/showmen. Strong dance skills not a must, but you do need to move and have rhythm. These five will also double as other minor speaking roles.
See also the full character and song lists here.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ASKED TO DO AT AUDITIONS:

Men and women auditioning for lead roles need to bring a prepared song that shows vocal range as well as acting through song. Accompanist will be provided. Bring sheet music of your selection. Sheet music needs to be for piano and as simple to sight read as possible. Remember that this may be the first time the pianist sees this music. Please no orchestral scores or crazy difficult time and key changes. The music director feels that a song from the show is fine, BUT be aware that there is always a chance of you being pinholed into that character in the eyes of those you are auditioning for. Finally, it would be best to perform an introspective and or stylized song. We are looking for strong acting through song. Song styles from the twenties, thirties, forties, or a torch song would be best.

UPDATE: If you wish, you may bring an UNPAID accompanist to your audition instead of relying on ours. You may also play for yourself, but since the song is being looked at for acting through singing, it is not highly recommended. No taped music will be allowed.

NOT EVERYONE HAS TO BOTH SING AND DANCE. If you want to just dance, let us know, if you want to be just chorus with basic movement, let us know. Everyone is encouraged to come to dance auditions just so we can see to what level of movement you can be used for in dance numbers. It may seem embarrassing to you but our choreographer can tell a lot from a little attempt at fumbling through the best you can.

CALLBACKS will be on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17TH 2010 at 7:00 P.M. These are by appointment, and only if needed.

REHEARSALS will be Sunday Afternoons, Monday and Wednesday evenings. Come with a list of conflicts. Almost all conflicts can be worked around EXCEPT TECH. WEEK AND THE RUN OF THE SHOW.

TECH. WEEK runs Sunday, May 30; Monday, Memorial Day, May 31; Tuesday, June 1; Wednesday, June 2.
