Red Herring

Michael Hollinger; Directed by Elizabeth Wheeler

Three love stories, a murder mystery, and a nuclear espionage plot converge in this noir comedy about marriage and other explosive devices. It's 1952 and America is on the verge of the H-bomb, Dwight Eisenhower's on the campaign trail, and I Love Lucy is on Monday night television. Detective Maggie Pelletier has to find out who dumped the dead guy in the Harbor or lose out on a honeymoon in Havana. Join us for a story about love and tying (and untying and retying) the knot.

Cast requirements:
Number of Women: 3 (ages 20-60)
Number of Men: 3 (ages 20-60)

Character Descriptions:
It's 1952 and all action takes place in 3 locations: Boston, Wisconsin, and South Pacific. The hardest part of this show is that the six actors play 18 characters. Each character will need to be unique. Although, the audience will clearly know the actors are playing other characters, they should look physically different: voices, physicality, and clothing.

Maggie (30s-40s) - The actress that plays this character only plays this role. She is a Boston detective. She is spunky and smart.

Lynn McCarthy (20s) - This actress plays two characters. As Lynn, she is the very conservative christian daughter of Senator Joe McCarthy from Wisconsin. As the Office Clerk, she is pessimistic, gloomy and unfriendly.

Florence Kravitz (50s) - This actress plays three characters. As Mrs. Kravitz, she is tough and bossy and owns a rental property. As Mrs. McCarthy, she is a prime and proper 1950s housewife. Then, as Mrs. Van Nostrand, she is a well-off owner of a bridal shop - think Martha Steward with lots of jewelry.

Frank Keller (30-40) - This actor plays three characters. As Frank, he is a hard-working detective who is in love with Maggie. He also plays a Priest and military man, Major Hartwell.

James Appel (20s) - This actor plays four characters. As James, he is a naive young lad who has fallen in love with Lynn. As Woody, he is a crime scene photographer who loves his job. As Harry, he is a nerdy morgue coroner who is ready for the upcoming election. He also plays the bartender.

Andrei Borchevsky (50s) - This actor plays four characters. As Andrei, he is a fisherman with a Russian accent who has been forced into spying for the Russians because of his wife. He also plays Petey, who is another detective and Frank's partner. As Dr. Kasden, he will be testing the atomic bomb. As Herbert, he is the complacent pitiful husband of the bridal shop owner. Oh! And he plays a corpse.

Rehearsals for Red Herring will be on Sunday afternoons, Monday nights and Wednesday nights. Tech rehearsals will be held from April 14th - April 17th. Please bring a list of any conflicts you may have to auditions.
